Section 21 Notices – Reform Update
24/04/2019The Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government has announced that there will be a consultation to discuss the abolition of section 21 notices. The Government intends to bring an “end to private landlords uprooting tenants from their homes with as little as eight weeks’ notice after the fixed-term contract has come to an end.”
Under the proposals, a landlord will still be able to evict tenants for the non-payment of rent or a breach of the terms of the mortgage. There will also be amendments so that landlords will still be able to evict tenants if the landlord intends to sell the property or move into it. The Government have also stated that they will expedite the Court process to ensure that landlords are able to swiftly and smoothly regain possession of their property.
The consultation intends to bring about a complete overall to the housing sector and further details are expected soon.
